4 minutes reading time

Kemptthal, Switzerland, May 19, 2022 - The Swiss foodtech start-up Planted, known for alternative proteins, continues to rely on its home base in Switzerland and is investing in capacity expansion at its production site in Kemptthal. Planted has been able to double its production capacity as a result of the investment. The site will become the largest Swiss as well as the most modern European production facility for plant-based meat. Since May, Planted has been opening its doors to innovation lovers and knowledge seekers on selected Saturdays.

Demand for environmentally friendly food has grown rapidly, especially in the last two years. Planted produces meat from alternative proteins, focusing on the perfect bite. Inspired by nature, the company is pioneering a novel biostructuring approach that combines protein structuring and biotechnology. Using proprietary technologies, Planted structures alternative proteins into any size and shape to achieve perfect fiberization. In addition, Planted is committed to using only natural ingredients and no additives in its products. Since 2020, research and production has been carried out at the Kemptthal site. The plant is steadily gaining in importance and, with the current expansion, is becoming the largest Swiss as well as the most modern European production facility for plant-based meat.

Green Technology for Kemptthal

Green technology played a central role in the construction of the new plant. The site has an energy recovery system. With this system, the energy generated in the heating and cooling processes of the production as well as the room air conditioning can be reused. In the future, Planted will even be able to feed the energy that is not needed itself into the emerging district heating network of the industrial park "The Valley", which is being developed by Mettler2Invest. This will greatly reduce the energy consumption of the plant and the area and minimize the consumption of resources. Planted proves once again that a new standard of sustainability in production can be achieved through innovation.

A look into the future

Planted is available in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France, Italy and, more recently, in the UK in restaurants and retail outlets, as well as in its own web store across Europe. The Planted products, each made from different protein sources (peas, oats, sunflower), currently include: planted.™chicken, planted.™pulled, planted.™kebab and planted.™schnitzel. Planted continues to upgrade. The company believes that in the future, biostructured proteins will beat animal meat in terms of taste, sustainability, health, productivity and price. More office buildings and research laboratories are already in the works at the Kemptthal site.
